HEADLINE: 25th birthday of Israeli MIA noted in Congress

BYLINE: Melissa Radler

NEW YORk - The 25th birthday of Israeli MIA Guy Hever was noted in the US House of Representatives today by Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-NY), who called on the government to be "far more aggressive in demanding the release of Israel's missing men,"and urged Congress to pass the Syrian Accountability Act.

Speaking days before the upcoming visit of Syrian Foreign Minister Farouk Shara to Washington next week, Weiner reiterated his support for the Act, which would impose political and economic sanctions on Syria until it halts terrorist operations committed by Hizbullah and fights international terror. Syria is listed as one of seven state sponsors of terrorism by the State Department.

"If we allow Syria or other states to remain unaccountable for holding Israeli hostages, we are simply inviting more hostage taking in the Middle East and throughout the world,"said Weiner during the floor speech. Last seen by his parents and commanding officers on his Golan Heights base on August 16, 1997, Hever was reportedly seen near the Syrian border before vanishing without a trace, and some have suggested that he was taken captive by Hizbullah.
